A Silent from "The Impossible Astronaut"

The Silence was a religious order from the British television show Doctor Who that dedicated itself to eliminating The Doctor in order to prevent the reemergence of the Time Lords. While the organization itself has nothing in common with the Slender Man, the humanoid creatures that represent them do. Collectively known as Silents, the genetically engineered priests of the church bear an undeniable resemblance to the Slender Man and share many of his abilities.

Relation to Slender Man[]

Similarities[]

Tonight on BBC One

The Silents most notable ability is erasing the memories of their victims, a trait that the Slender Man has displayed in many stories. However, whereas Slender Man can choose which memories he wants to erase, the victims of a Silent will lose all knowledge of their existence the second they look away from them. The only way someone can prevent this is by wearing a device known as an eye drive, which artificially records information concerning these creatures and fed it directly into the brain.

The Silents can influence the actions of others by issuing commands to anyone looking at them. These orders would remain in a person's mind even after they had forgotten the encounter with the Silent, acting like post-hypnotic suggestions. This is somewhat similar in nature to Proxies, whose thoughts and actions are influenced by the Slender Man through mind control.

Differences[]

While Slender Man has smooth pale skin where his face should be, the Silents have wrinkly grey skin, and visible eyes.

Trivia[]

  • While most people believe that the Silents were based on Slender Man, Stephen Moffat stated that he drew inspiration from Edvard Munch's famous 1893 expressionist painting The Scream, Men in Black myths from the 1950's, and Gray Alien myths during the creation process of the Silence.
